Earlier this month, Hong Kong banned three MDH flavors of the Everest masala product following excessive allegations of ethylene oxide.

The Hong Kong Food Safety Authority claimed that some Everest Masala products packaged by Indian companies MDH and Everest Masala contained the pesticide ethylene oxide and advised the public not to consume these products.

It is significant that MDH and Everest products are the most popular spices in India and the world.

Everest has previously stated that its products are safe to use, but MDH has not commented on this news.

An FDA spokesperson told Reuters: “The FDA is aware of these reports and is gathering more information regarding the incident.

India has a government spice board that controls exports.

said it received information from two Indian companies earlier this week and began examining their factories

to find the “root cause” of quality problems.

Ethylene oxide has many industrial uses. It is also used as an antiseptic in spices.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says this chemical may cause cancer in humans.

In 2018, the EPA wrote that there is evidence that human exposure to ethylene oxide increases the risk of lymphoma and breast cancer in women.

Indian spices have also been subject to international sanctions in the past. In 2023, the US Food and Drug Administration ordered Everest’s sambar, Everest masala, and garam masala to be removed from the market.

It was determined that all of these spices were effective against Salmonella.

These bacteria can cause diarrhoea, abdominal pain, fever, dizziness, or vomiting.

Ethylene oxide is a colourless oil. It is frequently used in agriculture, medicine, and the food industry to make fumigants, insecticides, and antibiotics.

Ethylene oxide is used to purify and control insects in spices and other dried foods. Ethylene oxide is used to protect foods from bacteria, fungi, and insects.

However, many health institutions are concerned that it may cause cancer. It has also been shown to increase the risk of pregnancy.

Given the dangers of ethylene oxide, food regulatory authorities in many countries have established strict regulations regarding the use of ethylene oxide in foods.

These countries have strict laws to determine ethylene oxide content.
